News: Further delays on the Kingston Westbrook dome

Over the past couple of years since the Westbrook Dome project began, a number of delays have hit along the way, unfortunately.

The first news came in early May that things were delayed up with construction of the new dome at the Westbrook Golf Club. Then, it was late August, and now... another round of delays.

Fix the CSL - Matchfixing in Canada (Updated)

Last May, Canadian Soccer News posted a story about match fixing going on around the world, including mentions of two CSL teams, Trois Rivierès and Toronto Croatia.

This Wednesday, September 12th, CBC will be airing a report by investigative reporter Diana Swain on The National (10pm ET on CBC, 9 and 11pm ET on CBC News Network).  According to the press release, this report will look at a German gang responsible for match fixing in games around the world and will reveal wiretap evidence of a fixed CSL game in Trois Rivierès, Quebec.

Weekend Roundup - Sept 8/9

The second weekend of September saw the OUA seasons continue, the OCAA season kick off, and a return home for local CSL team Kingston FC. The majority of the games took place out of town, in the Greater Toronto Area in fact, while Kingston FC had the weekend at home all to themselves.

In the OUA, RMC was playing the University of Toronto on Saturday and Ryerson Sunday, while Queen's played the same teams, but in the opposite order. St. Lawrence kicked off their outdoor season with a visit to the Centennial Colts in Scarborough on Sunday afternoon, and Kingston FC faced off against the Serbian White Eagles from Toronto on Saturday evening.

Weekend Roundup - Sept 1/2

With the opening weekend of the university seasons now underway, it was fitting that the Queen's University Gaels would face off against their cross-town rivals RMC Paladins to start things off.

Over the last few years, the RMC teams have been weaker than Queen's, primarily due to recruiting and admission requirements at RMC, but this weekend's games really showed that gap. The games were both played Sunday afternoon out at the new turf field at West Campus, which is now the home of Queen's soccer. The teams will play their entire home schedules there, but still practice twice a week on the Richardson grass fields.

GKSSA Playoff Finals

This week, the GKSSA men's league playoff finals were held, all three being played out at the new Barr Homes Soccerplex off of County Road 6, just west of Amherstview.

The C Division final was contested by the top two teams in the division, the JKL Rangers and LCFC III Fanatics. LCFC III Fanatics came out on top of this game with a 3-0 result behind goals from Glenn Unan, Ryan Patterson, and Travis Merkley. Lorne Murphy recorded the clean sheet for the game as LCFC defeated the first place team in the division.

The B Division final was played the following night between RealtySource Red Bull and Ryatt United SC. Ryatt scored first on an own goal, but RealtySource was able to tie it up on the stroke of halftime on a goal from Jonathan Barbosa. The game went to extra time, and Nick Gregory scored with under two minutes left in the game to win the cup.

News: Kingston Westbrook dome delay (again)

Last year, the news came in early May that things were delayed up with construction of the new dome at the Westbrook Golf Club. This year, it was late August.

At the end of last week, Anita Harden informed the local soccer community that further delays had arisen and that shovels would be hitting the ground beginning today (Wednesday, August 29th). This would mean that the construction timeline for completion would be delayed until December 1st (or so). She advised the local user groups to find alternate plans for the fall.

High School - OFSAA Day 2 and Playoffs

Day two at the OFSAA AAA soccer tournament in Hamilton continued a disappointing showing for both the Regiopolis-Notre Dame girls and a good comeback attempt that fell just short by the Sydenham boys.

All of the games were delayed by about 90 minutes due to the thunderstorms the previous day, and thus the first round of the playoffs was also delayed, this time to Saturday morning.

After the final games from Thursday were completed, including Regiopolis-Notre Dame's 1-0 loss to Northern, the Sydenham boys were first up at 11am against Crestwood.

High School - OFSAA Day 1

With day one in the books at the boys and girls soccer OFSAA tournament in Hamilton, both Kingston teams find themselves with fairly big hills to climb.

Sydenham Secondary School, at their first ever provincial tournament, found themselves matched up against the defending boys champions, Corpus Christi from Burlington in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC). Unfortunately, Sydenham lost by a 3-0 scoreline in the tournament opener at 9am.

The Regiopolis-Notre Dame girls kicked off at 10:30am, also against Corpus Christi, but did not fare much better, dropping the game with a 4-2 scoreline with Jessica Almeida scoring her first two goals of the season, the second early in the second half to tie things up at 2-2. Unfortunately, Corpus Christi scored twice in the last seven minutes of the game to take the victory.

CSL: Kingston FC 1, York Region Shooters 1

After last week's first full and proper CSL game in Kingston (a 4-2 loss against the TFC Academy, covered in full on Waking The Red and the Kingston Whig-Standard), Kingston FC was prepared to look for their first win of the young CSL 2012 season against the York Region Shooters.

The CSL Division II game was played immediately beforehand and despite fighting back to a 3-2 scoreline late in the game, the Kingston FC Reserves dropped the game by a 4-2 result, a definite step up on last week's 10-0 scoreline!

The game kicked off with Kingston FC wearing blue and the York Region Shooters dressed in white, and Kingston attacking the north end of the pitch.

City of Kingston indoor plans (Updated)

In the late fall, the Westbrook Dome plans came to a standstill and the indoor soccer communities were left with few options for leagues and were forced to go out and rent gyms from schools, churches, and other organizations to try to get some playing time in. This left a lot of people disappointed and wondering what might be the state of the indoor game in Kingston in the fall of 2012.

Choosing the right University for a student-athlete

A little over a month ago, the first part of a series on University recruiting in Canada was posted here. Due to some real life events, the rest of the series was a bit delayed, and I apologize for that. Without further ado, onto part two.

It's one thing to to be recruited or to put yourself forward to a school, but choosing the right school for you is a really tough decision. Just how do you make the right one?
