High School - OFSAA Day 2 and Playoffs

Day two at the OFSAA AAA soccer tournament in Hamilton continued a disappointing showing for both the Regiopolis-Notre Dame girls and a good comeback attempt that fell just short by the Sydenham boys.

All of the games were delayed by about 90 minutes due to the thunderstorms the previous day, and thus the first round of the playoffs was also delayed, this time to Saturday morning.

After the final games from Thursday were completed, including Regiopolis-Notre Dame's 1-0 loss to Northern, the Sydenham boys were first up at 11am against Crestwood.

Crestwood came into the game having dropped points in their first two games with 3-1 and 3-0 scorelines but took the victory against Sydenham by a 3-0 result. A further 3-1 result against Mary Ward gave Crestwood 6 points on the day. With this, Sydenham had to defeat Father Bressani to have a chance at making the playoff round, and to make it through, had to defeat them convincingly.

The game was played at 3:30pm and Sydenham came out with the win, leaving them on 6 points with 5 goals score and 7 against (-2 goal differential), tied with Father Bressani at 6 goals for, 5 against (+1 GD), and Crestwood at 7 goals for, 6 against (+1 GD). The first tie-break that applied between the teams was goal differential, followed by goals against, pushing Father Bressani through to the quarter-finals on Saturday, and sending Sydenham home.

On the girls side, Regiopolis-Notre Dame had been officially eliminated from the competition before their third game kicked off at 12:30 against Ancaster. The game ended in a disappointing 2-1 loss for Regiopolis-Notre Dame, but they rebounded at 3:30pm to defeat Senator O'Connor by a 4-2 scoreline to finish off their tournament.

The final winners of the tournament on the boys side were Holy Cross of Woodbridge (York Region Athletic Association) with a 2-1 win over R.S. McLaughlin of Oshawa (Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics). Corpus Christi from Burlington (Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference) took the bronze medal over Father Bressani of Woodbridge (York Region Athletic Association) with a 3-0 victory.

On the girls side, Iona out of Mississauga (Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association) defeated the defending Louis Riel from Gloucester (National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association) in penalties after a 0-0 draw, winning 4-3 in kicks. The bronze was won by East Elgin from Aylmer (Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association) over Corpus Christi with a 4-1 scoreline.
